Gentics Content.Node and HTML5

Comment

The development team of Gentics managed by Laurin Herlt has been working on the realisation of a new texteditor for Gentics Content.Node for some time now. The editor replaces the current Live Editor, and is now compatible with all modern browsers. The product management of Gentics will soon present the usability concept of the editor. Some basic technological background information on the new texteditor and its development.

The standard

The HTML5 standard is about to be released. It is currently in “working draft” status. Gentics has been working on a support of this standard since the beginning of this year.

A new feature of HTML 5 is the „contentEditable“ attribute, which allows the direct editing of content within the website, without the use of forms. The first browser which supported this editing mode, was Internet Explorer 5.5. Now this feature has been added to HTML5, and is supported by all modern browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari).

The challenge

Laurin Herlt: „The current HTML5 draft specifies the contentEditable attribute on about 4 pages.

Well meant, but insufficient.

The development process has shown clear weaknesses of the standard. The specification omits a number of aspects, which are left open to the browser. Consequently each browser behaves differently. A browser independent and applicable texteditor must compensate this weakness. The standard must be improved in this aspect. The development costs of webapplication making use of this attribute, will either explode or the result will now be usable by all browsers.

I hope for a dialogue with the W3C authors to improve the standard and to generate an added value for the IT industry."

The following interactive demo is meant for the technologically interested, who are invited to test the behavior of the browser.

The solution

The new texteditor component abstracts the user interactions during text editing, and thus standardises the browser behavior. The development of this component is the basis of a modern texteditor in Gentics Content.Node.

A new floating, context aware menu provides all commont format options and allows inserting of new tags or elements. Moreover the text can be more easily structured in paragraphes and headlines.

A new table editor allows easy editing of tables. Loading times have been shorted, forms made redundant and the navigation and adding of cells can now be done through the tab key.

Due to the completely new architecture, the Javascript Editor is extensible. Nearly every feature is implemented via plugins (e.g. the basic formatting options and the tables editing).

We will continously inform you of the availability of a Gentics Content.Node release of the new editor.
