Aloha Editor – the world's best WYSIWYG editor?
„We want to develop the world’s most advanced editor“, was the ambitious vision of Haymo Meran, CTO, Gentics Software GmbH, when starting with the development of the Aloha Editor. The aim was to create a WYSIWYG editor, that combines high usability and future-oriented technology.
Usability and technology at high level
The Aloha Editor is a HTML5 WYSIWYG editor which enables fast and easy working in Content Managment Systems. Due to less icons and a fully developed technology, editing online contents makes really fun. The online editor is based on Javascript (jQuery) and HTML5. Thus it produces a clean code and the website is better ranked in Google. Multimedia-based contents, e.g. videos, can be integrated in a very comfortable way.
Editing can be done directly in the content, no hard to use set forms are needed. One click to edit is enough. The editor doesn’t need any iFrames. „With the Aloha Editor we have set a new standard in online editing", says Haymo Meran.
With the Aloha Editor users can copy directly from Microsoft Word and structure their content. Editing without pop ups is possible, as well as fast formatting. Compared to other editors the Aloha Editor reduces the working time of users by 25 %. For 100 users the savings per year are about EUR 150.000.
Community leads to international success
Gentics has developed the editor and then given it to an open source community. The aim of the community is to exchange new solutions and know how.
Already one month after the announcement more than 50.000 visits on the Aloha Editor website (http://www.aloha-editor.org) were registred and more than 20.000 have downloaded the editor. By now many well-respected international open source Content Management Systems have implemented the Aloha Editor. Together with the core team of jQuery the development is furthered. The innovation itself is still managed form Austria.
The high interest of the community can also be seen by the daily growth of Twitter messages about the editor. The international development team meets each other regularly to discuss and create new ideas. For the second time the Aloha Editor Developer Conference took place in San Francisco.
“I am very happy about the progress of the development. By 2012 55% of the CMS market shall profit from our results“, Meran explains the next goals. Typo3, Drupal, Wordpress, Gentics, Plone, Midgard as well as other CMS vendors have implemented the editor in their CMS. In Novmeber 2010 Gentics won the Janus Boye Web Idol Award in Aarhus, Denmark, with the Aloha Editor.
